Your Personal Data and Wiltshire Family History Society

VERY IMPORTANT NOTICE

For your membership to continue, please read what you are asked to do

The changing law will protect the rights of UK citizens and residents but will apply to data relating to members everywhere.

On 25th May 2018 the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) comes into force. This Legal Regulation controls the relationship between the individual members and Wiltshire Family History Society (WFHS) in respect of the personal data which they provided when joining.  The Society needs to hold the data in order to administer the Society’s activities and finances, to communicate with its members, and to keep them informed about the Society’s activities.

What you are asked to do

The GDPR requires the Society to obtain your specific consent to your data being held under the following Data Protection Policy.  Without your consent we will be unable to hold your data and your membership will, in effect, come to an end.

Data Protection Policy – The Society is registered under the UK’s Data Protection Act. Membership records and related subscription payment details are held on a computer database for Society use only and will not be passed to third parties. The Society also maintains a computer database of members’ surname interests. A condition of accepting surname interests from members is that the interests are published in the Society’s journal, together with the member’s name, postal and email addresses. Surname interests are also published on the Society’s website, but with a membership reference number only. Enquirers who request contact with a member in connection with their surname interests will be provided only with that member’s name, postal and email addresses.

Please provide your consent soon:

If you are an Internet user: log on to the WFHS website,

  • go to My Account, then Edit, then Update Your Profile to reveal your Profile Page.
  • Click on the Data Protection tab and read the Data Protection Policy information. [Note: you may need to hover the mouse arrow over the blue “i” in order to see the information.]

Wiltshire FHS - Salisbury Branch Family History Day

The Society will not be holding its Family History Day in June 2018, given the proximity of the South West Area Group (SWAG) of FHS holding their fair at STEAM on 30 June.

A Family History Day will be hosted by the Salisbury Branch on Saturday May 12th. It will include Family History Societies, traders and other organisations. The full range of Wiltshire FHS research facilities will be available and there will be free talks during the day.

Click on the above link to go direct to the page or find it through the Events Calendar page.

We look forward to welcoming you on the day.

A5 publications available as downloads

All 39 of our A5 Parish series publications, the three Books of Trade, Compleat Parish Officer and Handy Book of Parish Law are now available as downloads through Genfair. Click the appropriate link to go to the Genfair page. The forthcoming Spring 2018 sales leaflet, due late March, will reflect the changes.

Making these titles available as downloads, with a reduced price and no postage costs, should make these useful publications much more affordable.

New publications - PR transcripts, Manorial Court records and GWR Accident Hospital records

2017 Family History Day - Steam

Dig Deep into your Family History!

Thirty organisations had stands at STEAM in Swindon when the Society's Family History Day took place in the giant Great Western Hall.

Whether visitors needed help and advice to continue research already started, or were not sure where to begin, the WFHS team and many other societies, groups and companies were only too happy to help.  Visitors were able to purchase CDs, books and equipment to enhance their research, and they were able to listen to talks.

Click here for details of the stands and links to individual web sites.

In 2018 there will be two important family history events in Wiltshire:

-  12 May: WFHS annual Family History Day at Wilton, near Salisbury

- 30 June: South West Area Group of FHSs Family History Day at STEAM
