2017 Family History Day - Steam

Dig Deep into your Family History!

Thirty organisations had stands at STEAM in Swindon when the Society's Family History Day took place in the giant Great Western Hall.

Whether visitors needed help and advice to continue research already started, or were not sure where to begin, the WFHS team and many other societies, groups and companies were only too happy to help.  Visitors were able to purchase CDs, books and equipment to enhance their research, and they were able to listen to talks.

Click here for details of the stands and links to individual web sites.

In 2018 there will be two important family history events in Wiltshire:

-  12 May: WFHS annual Family History Day at Wilton, near Salisbury

- 30 June: South West Area Group of FHSs Family History Day at STEAM

Coach Trips 2017

We had a very successful trip to Who Do You Think You Are? Live show at NEC last Saturday, with 37 people - members and non-members joining our coach!

The next one is to National Archives at Kew on Saturday 3rd June -   Cost: £21 per person.

Our set-down point at Kew is at the National Archives - but this is only a short distance from Kew Gardens or the London Water and Steam Museum (steaming their rotative engines and their railway that day) or the Mechanical Music Museum at Kew Bridge, for anyone who would prefer visiting these places rather than the Archives!

On Saturday September 9th Cy Cutler and Jenny Pope are organising a trip to Hay on Wye, mecca of "pre -loved" books, with 22 bookshops in the town.  This trip is £15 per person.  Not strictly a Society trip - but one we think would be of great interest with the opportunity to browse (and buy) books on places and people connected to family history research

The final trip in 2017 is on 7 October to the Imperial War Museum in London with galleries and displays closely related to the First World War.  Cost £22.50

For all trips, we pick up in Westbury (6.30am), Devizes (7.00am), Chippenham (7.30am) and Swindon (8.00am).

New CDs and download releases - Bastardy, Vagrancy, Poor Law and Marriage Licence Bonds

We have released three new CDs, with all of them being available as downloads, and also made another CD available as a download.

This release is part of a process to make all of our publications available on CD and as downloads. We have published, in print, ten volumes of bastardy records and six volumes of  vagrancy passes records. In 2015 we also published, through Lulu, a significant book of Poor Law records. They are each now available as either a CD or a download through Genfair. You can also purchase the CD from our Resource Centre. See our Publications page for how to do this.

Each CD is priced at £12 and the download available at £11.

The Marriage Licence Bonds data has been available for some time on CD. It, too, is now available as a download.

Don't forget to check out the free to view, download and print name indexes to all of these publications. Follow the link from our Publications page.

Free Name Indexes to our Publications

We are now able to provide free name indexes to all of our 34 CMB titles and 4 of our other digital publications. All indexes are pdf files and can be viewed on screen or downloaded and copied and printed. A Wiltshire map showing the distribution of the CMB titles is also available to view and download. Access to the Free Name Indexes page is through our Publications page.
