Parish Registers were
started in England in 1538. A law had been passed ordering the clergy to
record baptisms, marriages and burials and early records were kept on
parchment or paper. No records were kept before this date except a few
monks recorded the events of prominent families. It was not however
until 1598 that the records were required to be kept in books, and
parishes were instructed to backdate them to 1538. Few did so, and only
11 Wilts parishes have records that survive from 1538.
A few of the earlier paper/parchment survivals are classed as BT's in
the catalogue.
Bishops Transcripts By 1598 it had become the recognised
practice for the incumbent to send to the Bishop a copy of the years'
entries in the parish registers. These copies are known as Bishops
Transcripts or BTs. Where they have survived they are useful, not only
when the original registers have been lost, but even when they have
survived, as the Bishops' Transcripts may provide different or
additional information. As they are contemporary with the parish
registers they present the same handwriting problems.
The Society has a programme of transcribing baptisms and burials from
parish registers for Wiltshire. Provided that they are available in
fiche or CDs, transcripts have not been reprinted in book form after a
period of five years from the date of first publication. However, due to
demand, some of them are now being reprinted. Below is a list of
available transcripts.
Transcribing teams meet at the Wiltshire and Swindon History Centre,
Chippenhan each Friday at 9.30am and they will be pleased to welcome any
helpers.
CDs of baptisms have been published as
listed below, each at a price of £17 plus £1.20 p+p, from 10
Castle Lane, Devizes. SN10 1HJ both UK and overseas. The parishes
included are shown in the list and a complete summary
at the bottom of the page.
Those in red are in book form only until
stocks run out.
NA = not available.
The information is the same for both formats.
